What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is any service that your dentist provides to enhance the beauty of your smile. Simple teeth whitening procedures, white metal-free fillings, or porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges can do this. Orthodontics can also be included since it does ultimately enhance your smile.

How do you become a cosmetic dentist?

All dentists do cosmetic dentistry. It is not a dental specialty. Many dentists choose to meet the annual continuing education requirements of the state licensing board by focusing on the latest developments in cosmetic materials, procedures, and technology.

How do I know if cosmetic dentistry is right for me?

At your next dental appointment ask your dentist any questions you may have. Some cosmetic procedures are very conservative, whereas, others can be more aggressive and non-reversible. Cosmetic procedures should not be performed until your overall dental health and oral hygiene are at an acceptable level. Get a second opinion if you feel it is necessary.

Can cosmetic dentistry fix my problem?

Cosmetic dentistry cannot be the “dental savior” to all people. No dental procedure or service will last forever. Patients will always need preventive dentistry, and access to other dental specialists in their communities. Always be informed before getting any extensive treatment done.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are tooth colored restorations, best made by a dental laboratory technician after the teeth have been “prepared” by a dentist. Generally speaking, veneers are used to enhance the teeth that are most visible at the front of ones mouth.

There are different types of veneers available. Some require aggressive removal of tooth structure, and others do not. No veneers will last forever so make sure you understand what you’re doing before you accept treatment.
